Eau de toilette, eau de parfum, perfume extract: how to choose?

When it comes to choosing a fragrance, concepts such as eau de toilette, eau de parfum, and parfum extract (commonly referred to as perfume) can seem confusing. What are the differences? Discover how to make the ideal choice for your style and olfactory needs. Toilet Water, Perfume, Perfume Extract:

The concentration

  • Toilet Water : Toilet water, often referred to as a lighter version of perfume, is characterized by its moderate concentration of essential oils, ranging from 5% to 15%. This less intense concentration makes toilet water perfect for daily use, offering a subtle and refreshing fragrance. Its delicate notes and light character make it pleasant for casual days and warmer climates where a more discreet olfactory presence is appreciated.
  • Perfume: Eau de parfum is distinguished by a higher concentration of essential oils, typically between 15% and 20%. This increased concentration gives eau de parfum a longer-lasting presence on the skin, as well as a superior olfactory intensity compared to eau de toilette. It is often preferred for special occasions or evenings when a more pronounced and lasting fragrance is desired. Eau de parfum offers a harmonious transition between the lightness of eau de toilette and the intensity of perfume.
  • Perfume (Extrait de Parfum): It is the Rolls-Royce of perfumery. The extrait de parfum has the highest concentration of essential oils, typically ranging between 20% and 30%. This high concentration of aromatic ingredients gives the perfume a very intense and long-lasting fragrance, far surpassing the intensity and longevity of eau de toilette and eau de parfum. Due to its olfactory power, a small amount of perfume is enough to create a lasting impression, especially during formal events or special evenings. As a reminder; this is the concentration we chose for the design of Our Elixirs.

The 2 Criteria for Choosing

  • Intensity: If you prefer a subtle fragrance for daily use, choose eau de toilette. For a pronounced olfactory presence, eau de parfum or perfume will be more appropriate.
  • Longevity: For a prolonged wear, prefer eau de parfum or perfume, as their higher concentration ensures a fragrance that lasts longer on the skin.

Practical advice

  • Try before you buy: Before committing to the purchase of a fragrance, test it on your skin to assess how it evolves over time.
  • Adapt to the occasion: Consider the event or moment when you plan to wear the fragrance. A eau de toilette may be perfect for the day, while an intensified perfume will be better suited for an evening.

Conclusion

Choosing between eau de toilette, eau de parfum, and perfume depends on your preference in terms of intensity, longevity, and occasion. Consider these criteria to find the fragrance that best reflects your style and personality.
